What is Corsi For %?
The share of shot attempts a team takes when this player is on the ice.
What this tells us
When this player is on the ice at full strength, what percentage of all shot attempts (by both teams combined) does his team take? A Corsi For % above 50% means his team is outshooting the opponent. A 55% means for every 100 shots attempted by both teams, his team took 55. The higher the number, the more offensive pressure his team generates while he's playing.
Limitations
Corsi treats every shot the same — a slap shot from the blue line counts the same as a tap-in from the crease. That's why we also show xG (expected goals), which weights shots by how dangerous they actually are. Corsi For % can also be affected by score effects: teams that are winning late in a game often sit back defensively and take fewer shots, which can artificially lower the stat even if the player was dominant earlier.
Formula[show]
CF% = (Shots For) / (Shots For + Shots Against) × 100Example
A top-line forward typically posts a Corsi For % between 52% and 56%. A fourth-line or defensive role player might be closer to 48% to 50%. A player at exactly 50% means his team is taking an equal share of shots when he's on the ice.
