What is Years Remaining?
How many seasons a player's current contract will still be in effect.
What this tells us
When you see a player's contract details, years remaining tells you how long his team has committed to paying him at the agreed rate. A player in year 2 of a 5-year deal has 4 years remaining. This matters because teams can't easily move on from long contracts, and players with expiring deals become more valuable in trade negotiations.
Limitations
Years remaining doesn't account for buyouts, trades, or contract terminations — all of which can shorten the actual time a player remains under contract. It also doesn't tell you whether the contract is a good deal or a burden; that depends on the cap hit and the player's performance.
Example
A veteran on a five-year contract signed three years ago has 2 years remaining. A young star in year 1 of an eight-year deal has 7 years remaining.
