What is Neutral Zone?
The area of the rink between the two blue lines, where neither team has possession advantage.
What this tells us
When the puck is in the neutral zone, it's in play but not in either team's defensive end. This is the transition space where teams move the puck from defense to offense, and where you'll see speed and transition plays happen. Most of the time, a team wants to move through the neutral zone quickly to get into the opponent's end where they can shoot and score.
Limitations
The neutral zone itself is just geography — it doesn't tell you anything about what's happening tactically. A team can control the neutral zone but still get outshot, or struggle in transition but dominate once they're in the attacking zone. Neutral-zone play matters most in context with entries, exits, and what happens next.
Example
A team with good transition players (fast skaters who move the puck quickly through the middle) will spend less time in the neutral zone because they get into the attack faster. A team that dumps and chases will spend more time in it.
