What is Fenwick For %?
The share of unblocked shot attempts a team takes when this player is on the ice.
What this tells us
When this player is on the ice, what percentage of the unblocked shots are his team firing versus the opponent? Fenwick For % tells you if his team is dominating the play in a way that matters for scoring chances — it's Corsi's cousin, but it ignores shots that get blocked before reaching the goalie, so it's a cleaner picture of actual offensive pressure.
Limitations
Fenwick still treats all unblocked shots the same — a wrist shot from the hash marks counts the same as a shot from the point. It also doesn't account for shot quality or danger. That's why we also show xG%, which weights shots by how likely they are to go in. Fenwick can also be influenced by score effects (teams that are losing tend to shoot more) and the quality of linemates.
Formula[show]
FF% = (Fenwick For) / (Fenwick For + Fenwick Against) × 100Example
A top-line forward typically posts a Fenwick For % between 52% and 56%. A depth forward or defensive-minded player might sit closer to 48% to 50%.
