What is Defense Pair?

Abbreviated: D-pair

Two defensemen who regularly play together as a unit on the ice.

What this tells us

When a defense pair is on the ice together, they're responsible for protecting your net and moving the puck up ice as a team. Good pairs have chemistry — they know where each other will be, they communicate, and they defend as one. You'll see the same two names paired together night after night because coaches want that consistency and trust.

Limitations

A defense pair's effectiveness depends heavily on who they're playing against and which forwards are on the ice with them. Two defensemen might look great against a weak opponent but struggle against elite scorers. Also, injuries or trades can break up a pair mid-season, so consistency isn't guaranteed.

Example

A team typically has three defense pairs rotating in and out of games, with the top pair getting the most ice time and facing the toughest competition.
